U.S. Army Corps of Engineers doing its part for the Musayib Civic Center

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking center stage in Babil province, Iraq, by playing its part as the construction management partner for the Musayib Civic Center.

The civic center is the "keystone" project for the province according to Peter Cooper, the construction representative for the USACE Gulf Region District, Forat Resident Office. "The Musayib District Council and staff will operate the center allowing both private groups and government entities to use the facility," Cooper said. "This venue gives local governments a place to conduct high level engagements and hold district level meetings." The civic center will also function as a performing arts center for the community.

The project consists of a 300-seat, two-story amphitheater/auditorium with all the amenities. The design plans call for building a café with kitchen and bathrooms on both floors of the civic center. The center will also have a heating and air conditioning system, a central fire alarm and a back-up power generator. "Many of the finishes for the facility are top of the line including Egyptian ceramic tile, granite flooring and red marble accents in the front exterior walls," Cooper said. These upgrades were not included in the scope of work but were contributed by the contractor in order to make the civic center a show place for the local community, according to Cooper.

The Iraqi owned Al Gayath Company is serving as the general contractor for the $1.5 million project. Funding for the project was provided through the Iraqi Commander's Emergency Response Fund. Over 25 local Iraqi construction workers are working on the project, which is scheduled to be completed on-time in late August.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq has completed thousands of reconstruction projects in partnership with the U.S. government and the government of Iraq. Since 2004, USACE has completed 5,257 projects throughout Iraq valued at more than $9.1 billion, and has more than 250 projects ongoing. The overall reconstruction effort in Iraq currently provides jobs for more than 20,000 Iraqis.
