CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – Spc. John Hansen, a combat medic with 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, is currently stationed at Contingency Operating Site Marez, near Mosul, Iraq.
This is Hansen's first deployment. His duties as a medic include working at the aid station on base and making sure his Soldiers are well taken care of and are drinking enough water in this severely warm environment.
Hansen, an Anderson, S.C., native, is also assigned to a personal security detachment that escorts members of the Ninewa Provincial Reconstruction Team, as well as the Task Force Marne Deputy Commanding General Support Brig. Gen. Thomas S. Vandal.
According to Hansen, while he provides security for these important individuals, his Soldiers' lives are equally as important.
"I'm their first line care that they get … if something were to happen," he said.
As for the rest of his deployment, Hansen is optimistic, and keeping a good, positive attitude.
"I'm happy," he said. "I've been in for three years, and out here, it feels like I am able to operate with my job. I'm actually watching over for my team. It's nice not to be looking at a textbook. Out here, I'm actually doing my job."
Hansen is married to his wife Emily Hansen and has two cattle dogs. His parents, John and Barbara Hansen, reside in Anderson, S.C.
