MOSUL, Iraq - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Gulf Region District, Mosul Resident Office is really into building police stations in Iraq's second largest city. The Mosul engineers are the management partners for construction of nine new police stations and rehabbing two existing Iraqi police stations disbursed throughout the city.
The construction of police stations is nothing new to the resident office engineering team who oversaw the construction of six expedient police stations built to boost force protection prior to the March elections.
The purpose of the new police stations is to help return the rule of law according to the Iraqi project engineer responsible for the police station project. "Mosul has suffered from insurgent attacks for years," the engineer said. "This project is helping to provide a safe community where people can trust the police and that in itself is a victory for Mosul."
The scope of work for the stations provides for a similar design in all 11 police stations with each station positioned behind a wall of 3.6 meter "T-walls." An additional 2.5 meter concrete wall will also surround the police station house. Each station site will have a central entry control point, reception building and vehicle and pedestrian gate. The police stations will also have reinforced guard towers at each corner of the building.
Each new police station site will have a water storage and distribution system, a power generation system and a sewage collection and treatment system. In the absence of the capability of hooking into the city's electrical power grid, the stations will have a primary and backup generator. The site will also have a two-bay vehicle maintenance facility with a central tool room and a fuel point with a 5,000 liter benzene fuel tank.
The three-story police stations will have sufficient space to accommodate more than 140 police officers. Each station will also house a jail, an armory and central kitchen.
The Iraqi owned Albilal Group is serving as the general contractor for six of the new police stations. Cosmopolitan Company is responsible for the other three new police stations. The Hozan and Dleen Companies are performing the rehabilitation of two police stations. The new stations cost $1.5 million each, with funding provided through the Iraq Security Forces Fund.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Iraq has completed thousands of reconstruction projects in partnership with the government of Iraq. Since 2004, USACE has completed 5,257 projects throughout Iraq valued at more than $9.1 billion, and has more than 250 projects ongoing. The overall reconstruction effort in Iraq currently provides jobs for more than 20,000 Iraqis.
