ABOARD USS TARAWA, At sea in the Arabian Sea (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Michael A. LeFever, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 1, received orders from the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld Jan. 6, to remain in Pakistan through the winter in command of Combined Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) Pakistan (PAK). Rear Adm. John W. Miller, the Deputy Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, has assumed the duties as ESG-1 commander while LeFever leads the U.S. military humanitarian efforts from Islamabad effective Jan. 7.

The situation in Pakistan remains critical, as recent heavy snows have hindered international relief efforts. LeFever and a portion of the ESG-1 staff will remain as the command and control element of DAC-PAK until late spring. DAC-PAK is comprised of a force of more than 800 U.S. military personnel assisting the government of Pakistan in providing medical care, airlift capabilities and construction support to the victims of the devastating Oct. 8 earthquake that killed an estimated 75,000 people in the mountainous region of Kashmir.

Miller will command the strike group as it transits through the 5th, 7th and 3rd Fleet areas of operation. He will return to NAVCENT at the conclusion of the ESG-1 deployment.
