VITI/VITINA, Kosovo – An American doctor brought the lessons he learned while serving in Iraq to medical professionals in Viti/Vitina during a Regional Grand Rounds presentation May 27.
Maj. William Montgomery, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., an orthopedic surgeon deployed to the Camp Bondsteel hospital, taught a group of more than 40 Kosovo medical professionals how to treat an open fracture before transferring the injured person to an orthopedic surgeon. He stressed the importance of treatment to prevent infections, including the use of antibiotics.
Dr. Nazim Dauti, the director of the Health House Family Medical Center in Viti/Vitina, was the local sponsor of the Grand Rounds event. He was impressed by Montgomery's presentation.
"It was a good lesson for us," Dauti said. "What was most important was that the lecture came from his own experience in Iraq. We have not been exposed to these orthopedic techniques before."
The Grand Rounds are designed to bring medical professionals from Kosovo together with their KFOR counterparts to share experiences, said Maj. Christopher A. Burgess, Canton, Mich., Grand Rounds coordinator for Multinational Battle Group East's Falcon Med.
In addition to instructing the medical professionals on initial treatment techniques, Montgomery covered general techniques used by orthopedic surgeons to treat open fractures, wrapping up his presentation with a walkthrough of the treatment of serious open fractures.
"These events are helpful to build bonds between professionals and bring members of the medical community together," said Montgomery. "I hope they can take some of these concepts home and use them."
Dauti said the presentation was very useful.
"For us as general practice doctors, it was important to learn that it is not necessary to immediately treat every open fracture with surgery," he said.
Montgomery has been in Kosovo since March and will be departing soon.
"The best part has been getting out into the community and working with local surgeons and their patients," he said. "It has been a rewarding experience."
Burgess said that MNBG E's Task Force Med Falcon works to put on regional Grand Rounds events on a regular basis. In addition to Viti/Vitina, since October 2009, events have been held in Kamenica/Kamenice, Ferizaj/Urosevac, Gjilan/Gnjilane and Strpce/Shtrpce.
The next scheduled Grand Rounds event will be held in Strpce/Shtrpce in June and will focus on post traumatic stress disorder. An event is also planned for Kacanik/Kacaniku in July.
