SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Thousands of miles from his hometown of Cary, N.C., and his home post at Fort Bragg, N.C., 1st Lt. Scott Kamp is on the front lines providing air defense at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia.
Kamp, detachment commander for the Echo Maintenance Company of the 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, is also a U.S. Army mechanical maintenance officer. The deployed Soldier talked about what his company provides to the deployed mission for the 1-7 ADA.
"Our detachment provides the maintenance and logistics support to the Army forces in this deployed location," said the three-year Army veteran. "We run the supply warehouse and have the capability to repair and service all wheeled vehicles, weapons, air conditioners, generators, communications and electronics equipment, and Patriot-specific systems. We also have a welding and fabrication section."
According to his official Army job description for the 91A officer career field, officers like Kamp provide materiel management and maintenance of armament, tank and ground mobility equipment, wheeled and general purpose vehicles, ground support materiel and other mechanical equipment and associated non-mechanical equipment except for medical, aerial delivery and cryptographic materiel.
Kamp also provides materiel management and maintenance of missile and electronic systems materiel including missile rounds and associated guidance launching, handling and test equipment, command and control systems, directed energy systems and logistics space systems. This also includes test measurement and diagnostic equipment.
In joining and serving in the military, Kamp said he is proud to be in the Army and serving on the front lines of air defense in Southwest Asia.
"I am very proud to be a Soldier and serve the greatest country in the world," Kamp said. My grandfather served in World War II and he always inspired me to do the same. I can't think of any other job that could be more rewarding and that I would enjoy more."
The first lieutenant said he is proud of all the Soldiers he works with and is grateful for the support from people back home.
"I am very proud of all the hard work my Soldiers and NCOs put in every day to make our battalion successful," Kamp said. "I am also very thankful for the sacrifices and support from our families back home."
The 1-7 ADA is known as the "No Fear" battalion, according to its official history. The battalion is part of the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command. The battalion displays 35 battle streamers ranging from the North African desert and the plains of Europe during World War II, the frozen battlefields of Korea, the jungles and highlands of Vietnam, the deserts of Southwest Asia during Operation Desert Storm to more recently with support for operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
