BISMARCK, N.D. — A North Dakota National Guard Soldier was among the first Army engineers to receive a new prestigious military engineer award, the "Steel Order of the de Fleury Medal." Spc. Adam Walsvik, of Hazen, N.D., serves with the 188th Engineer Company (Vertical) and was the first specialist in the Army National Guard nation-wide to receive this newly established medal. The award was presented last April at the annual Engineer Force Conference at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. by Brig. Gen. Bryan Watson, U.S. Army Engineer School commandant.

In 2009, Walsvik bested his way to the national All-Guard Best Warrior competition at Fort Benning, Ga., after securing a first-place win in the enlisted category of the Region Six competition. His excellent performance in the GBW, combined with his outstanding service during the N.D. Guard's 2009 and 2010 spring flood response, earned him the Steel de Fleury Medal nomination from his unit.

"Spc. Walsvik is an outstanding Soldier who serves as an example of the strength and exceptional quality of the young men and women serving in the North Dakota National Guard," said State Command Sgt. Maj. Gerald Miller.

"For him to be recognized by his leadership for this newly established medal is truly a tribute to his abilities and contributions."

The Army Engineer Association's "Steel Order of the de Fleury Medal" is designed to recognize junior Army leaders who excel within the military engineer fields and specialties. There are other levels of the de Fleury medal, but the new "Steel" medal is only authorized to be given to specialists on their first enlistment, sergeants, staff sergeants, warrant officer 1, chief warrant officer 2, lieutenants and junior captains before they command companies. Each U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard engineer battalion and equivalent units are limited to only five Steel de Fleury Medals each year.
