Representatives from the United States Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction visited Dhi Qar to inspect the U.S. funded Dhi Qar Water Treatment Plant in Ash Shatrah 20 May.
The SIGIR representatives met with key Provincial leaders at the Mittica Training Center prior to the inspection to discuss the water treatment plant and its impact on the population of Dhi Qar.
Abdul Hussein Hadi Hajer, the Dhi Qar Provincial Council’s Deputy Chairman for Technical Affairs expressed thanks to the United States and the Dhi Qar Provincial Reconstruction Team, from the people in Dhi Qar Province who now have the ability to receive clean drinking water.
The plant will be capable of supplying enough water for all of the Dhi Qar’s residents when the distribution system is expanded to cover the entire province.
“The water treatment plant is currently supplying water to 900,000 of Dhi Qar’s 1.85 million residents,” said Hajer.
While periodic electrical shortages affect the water treatment plant and distribution system, it still provides regular water services for three major cities, Ash Shatrah, Al Gharraf, and the Provincial Capital, An Nasiriyah.
The Mayor of Ash Shatrah praised the plant stating, “All of my residents get their water from this facility.”
“The plant still has challenges that need addressed, however, the plant is receiving water from the Shatt Al Gharraf River at 70 percent capacity and purifying water at 60 percent capacity,” said a representative of SIGIR.
