CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait— One Soldier was killed and two were injured June 4 in a vehicle crash north of Camp Arifjan.
The Soldiers were members of the 287th Transportation Company.
Dead is Army Staff Sgt. Steve Martin Theobald, 53, a motor transport operator.
The two injured Soldiers were initially transported to a Kuwaiti trauma center for treatment. One was later transported to Landstuhl, Germany, for additional treatment and the other to a local medical facility at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Both were in stable condition.
A memorial service took place at the Camp Arifjan Zone 1 Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Monday.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Theobald arrived March 28, 2010, for his second deployment to the Middle East. He was assigned to the 287th Convoy Security Company, 164th Transportation Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, as a transportation noncommissioned officer.
Theobald enlisted for three years in the regular Army on July 18, 1975. He re-entered the service through the Army Reserve April 26, 1984. Throughout a distinguished military career, Theobald served in the 116th Engineer Company, 1/145th Field Artillery, 7th Infantry Division, and the 202nd Cavalry. He previously deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003-2004 with the 7th Infantry Division.
A graduate of several military schools including the Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course and the Primary Leadership Development Course, Theobald was also decorated with the Army Achievement Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Noncommissioned Officer Development Program Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, two Army Overseas Ribbons, Overseas Service Bar and two Armed Forces Reserve Medals.
“We owe a debt of gratitude that we can never enumerate to all those men and women that have came before us and all those that will come after us,” said Lt. Col. Richard Rollins, commander of 164th Transportation Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade.
“As with the majority of us Soldiers, we like to cut up a little. It’s best to remember our team leader, comrade and friend and the times that we laughed. We must celebrate who he was, what he accomplished and how he influenced all of our lives,” said Staff Sgt. John Strang, transportation noncommissioned officer, 164th TB, 1st SB.
Theobald was born in Pensacola, Fla., Sept. 10, 1956, but called Goose Creek, S.C., home. He is survived by a wife, and three children.
