TIKRIT, Iraq (January 24, 2006) -- Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum, National Guard Bureau Chief, came to visit troops at Forward Operating Base Speicher today.
Blum greeted many Guardsmen "because they're here" and handed out coins.
"It makes you very proud to see the motivation of these young men and women that are so dedicated and competent," said Blum. "It makes me optimistic for the future of our country knowing we have people over here willing to serve our country."
The general was shown various aspects of the camp, including IED reports, robotic IED hunters, and the division headquarters. The general spent several minutes checking out one of the Army's robots that inspects possible IEDs.
"Anytime you can send a robot out to check an IED instead of a soldier, then it is a good idea to me," said Blum.
After the overview of the camp, Blum ate lunch with the troops.
"The most impressive thing I have seen is the quality and talent that these guardsmen bring to the site," said Blum. "Not only do they bring superb military skills, but civilian-acquired skills and life lessons that the army can't teach you. It really makes a big difference."
The National Guard Bureau Chief is responsible for developing and coordinating the policies and programs that affect all Army and Air National Guard personnel. He is appointed by the President and serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army, and the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force on all National Guard matters.
