CHEYENNE – Twenty-one Wyoming National Guard Soldiers returned home from their deployment to Afghanistan here June 24. The returning soldiers are members of C Company, 5th Battalion, 159th General Support Aviation or Charlie Med.

Family and friends from all over the state gathered at Cheyenne’s Raper Armory to welcome home the Soldiers after 10 months away from Wyoming. The wife of Chief Warrant Officer 3 Derek Fisbeck and their two children waited eagerly for their father’s return. Fisbeck’s son Connor said he can’t wait until he can go golfing, swimming and bowling with his dad.

“I can’t wait for Dad to rock me to sleep at night,” said Kaylee Fisbeck, Fisbeck’s youngest.

Fisbeck and his fellow Soldiers have been in Afghanistan since October performing medical evacuation mission in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The unit is comprised of pilots, crew chiefs, medics and maintenance personnel from Cheyenne, Laramie, Riverton, Casper, Rock Springs, and Sheridan as well as Colorado. During the activation, more than 650 wounded Soldiers, Afghan military, Afghan nationals and enemy prisoners of war were transported by this Charlie Med team. This was accomplished with no losses or accidents to the unit.

After being reunited, Soldiers and their loved ones gathered together as Col. Scott H. Schofield, deputy chief of staff, operations, formally welcomed home the troops. Schofield then turned it over to Maj. Gen. Ed Wright who noted that ‘Charlie Med’ is the most deployed and probably most recognized unit of the Wyoming National Guard.

Charlie Med has accomplished a tough yet rewarding mission, said Schofield, adding the members are “super dedicated” and train to do the best job possible.

“Without faith and encouragement we would not have been able to complete or have been as successful on our mission,” said Maj. Matt E. Greene, commander of the deployed unit. Greene dismissed his Soldiers deeming the mission complete, amid cheers and applause from the assembled family members.
