CAMP CROPPER, Iraq - Soldiers from the 49th Military Police Brigade Tactical Command Post ran a 5 kilometer event, June 14, 2010, to celebrate the Army’s birthday. The run also promoted spiritual fitness, morale, esprit de corps, and fostered a culture of fitness and identity.

The event was organized by Maj. Suk Kim, 49th Chaplain and was held at Camp Cropper, Iraq. The strength in numbers was demonstrated by the turnout of motivated runners. More than 68 soldiers and contractors participated in the run.

“This was my first 5k run. I’m proud of my running time and glad that I put myself up to this challenge,” said Spc. Edwin Yeppez who belongs to Alpha Company 72nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, a National Guard unit from Pasadena, Texas. Yeppez won the second place overall male in the race.

There were many winners on this day. Spc. Tyrone Johnson of the 1-141st Inf. Bn. was the first place overall male winner and Sgt. Alicia Koppes from the 705th MP Bn. placed first overall among all females. Koppes reflected, “I feel good running on the Army’s birthday; everyone should push themselves.”

There were also winners for different age groups. Winners received a framed certificate and a medal to show for their achievements.

After the run, the participants gathered for a group photo and to celebrate their accomplishments. Col. Grace Edinboro, 49th commander, addressed the runners. She remarked, “Soldiers with discipline and spiritually fit can perform their duty and responsibility with enthusiasm and positive attitude.”
