Afghan National Army Maj. Shireen Aqu, ANA public affairs officer, met with radio deejays Abduljamil and Ahmand Khalid to discuss the future of Hella-Radio.
“The plan is to inform and educate the local population with local, national and world wide news coverage,” said Aqu.
Before the new makeover, Hella Radio only played traditional music with minimal news coverage. Now the locals will be able to tune in and get up to date news along with a behind the scenes of the ANA.
Starting next month, Hella–Radio plans to implement a call-in line for the locals to voice their opinions and make song requests.
For the population in general, radio has traditionally been the voice of authority. A call-in radio show will give the locals a chance to voice their opinions and ask questions. While community based radio has tremendous potential to contribute to Afghanistan’s development, there is a need to create awareness and provide orientation on ways to use community-based media to support a combined ANA and Coalition forces’ efforts to secure and support democracy.
To inform the public of the ANA and Coalition forces joint efforts, Aqu said he is planning to embed himself with the ANA field units to get personal interviews with the ANA Soldiers.
He said, “We want to inform the people of Jalalabad, that serving in the ANA does not mean you give up on your religion, a misconception believed by some; all ANA Soldiers have time for prayer and for practicing their Muslim faith.”
Telling the story of ANA Soldiers from the field will help highlight what the ANA soldiers do to add to the development and security of Afghanistan, Aqua said.
Utilizing Hella-R to communicate will provide another cost effective means to reach the Afghan people and show the developments by the Afghan government, with the support of Coalition forces.
