MANAMA, Bahrain " Vice Adm. Patrick Walsh, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central (NAVCENT), U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Forces Maritime Component Command, recognized three Sailors for their outstanding performance at an admiral's call outside NAVCENT Headquarters Jan. 26.

"I think a wonderful way to start this tour here for me is to recognize those true heroes in our own midst who have done remarkable work and to recognize them in front of their peers, their seniors and subordinates for the great work they have done and the contributions they have made," said Walsh, who has been in command for three months.

Intelligence Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Tiffany Brown, Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class (SW/AW) Jason Weber and Cryptologic Technician (Communications) 2nd Class (SW) Shawntavia Keaton won top honors as NAVCENT's Senior Sailor, Junior Sailor and Bluejacket of the Year 2005, respectively.

Walsh awarded each of the Sailors a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Brown, from Junction City, Kan., produced 269 imagery-based products used by the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile Afloat Planning System. She also served as the command assistant fitness leader and command assistant drug and alcohol program advisor.

"I am very humbled. I feel that it is an honor to represent NAVCENT and my fellow first classes and to be a role model for junior Sailors," said Brown. "For my peers, it is our responsibility to share our wealth of knowledge and mentor our subordinates."

Weber, a native of Clatskanie, Ore., was recognized for his performance while serving on the indicators and warnings (I&W) watchfloor in NAVCENT's intelligence department. He significantly contributed to the production and dissemination of more than 1,000 I&W reports to more than 75 U.S. and coalition vessels.

"NAVCENT offers an awesome opportunity for junior Sailors to excel, being at the tip of the spear. It feels incredible to be honored in this way," he said. "I don't think I would have been able to do the work that I did, to be nominated and subsequently selected, if it wasn't for a great deal of faith and support from my fiancé and family."

Walsh advanced Keaton to the rank of petty officer second class as part of the Command Advancement Program (CAP). This program allows commanders and commanding officers to advance eligible personnel in paygrades E-3, E-4, and E-5 to the next higher paygrade without reference to higher authority.

"I would not have been able to achieve this honor without the support and encouragement of my chain of command, mentors, peers, family and close friends. To each of which I would like to say 'thank you"," she said.

According to citation accompanying her award, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native expertly led a three-person communications watch team in the critical dissemination of special intelligence across 26 circuits in support of theater operations. As a message handling system administrator, she managed 134 user accounts and 6,000 daily messages.

"The Sailor of the year, Junior Sailor of the year and Blue Jacket of the year are honors bestowed on the commands finest Sailors," said NAVCENT Command Master Chief Terry Byerly. "They are recognized for their leadership, teamwork, community involvement, job performance, mentoring, self improvement, mission support, and contributions to the command overall."
