BEAUFORT, S.C. - The Child Development Center’s preschool class clasped hands to take a journey across Geiger Boulevard and into the Air Station Library to enjoy new books May 20.

The Air Station Library hosts story time once a month for 30 minutes to help keep children interested in reading and comfortable with going to the library.

“Even though we read to our students every day at the CDC, the library’s story time gives children a chance to get out to the normal setting, which makes them feel refreshed and ready to learn,” said Loretta Gardner, a CDC preschool teacher.

The story time is broken up into small groups between the third and fourth Thursday of the month so the children can focus and each have time to ask questions.

During story time the students get a chance to have a story read to them by either Donna Humphreys, the Air Station library technician or Navy Lt. Adrienne Townsend, the Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron chaplain. They also can get involved in arts and crafts, listen to music or dance.

All of the activities done during story time help develop the children’s motor skills, according to Humphreys.

“This program is great for children because they are able to not only learn, but also ask questions,” Gardner said. “Watching children learn and seeing through a child’s eye makes my heart bubble up,” Gardner finished with a warm loving smile.

Although story time was created for the CDC children, it is not exclusive to them. Children who do not attend CDC as well as their parents are welcome to come enjoy story time, according to Humphreys.

“We would like to see more parent participation, especially from stay-at-home parents,” Humphreys said.

For more information about getting your child involved in story time or volunteering to help out, call Humphreys at 228-1672.
