MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Boating enthusiast took part in a two-day event, putting crews to the test during the 46th annual Hancock Yacht Club Regatta, July 11.

“A regatta is a boating event and a social event that brings out the best in people,” said Owen Smith, a former commodore of the Hancock Yacht club.

The regatta consisted of four races of which the competitors kept their three best finish totals while throwing out their worst.

“Racers earn points for the boat of the year award,” said Bill Egen, another former commodore of the Hancock Yacht Club. “The competitors being able to throw one race out makes for a more competitive race day.”

The competitors were separated into four classes depending on their type of boat.

“The classes were spinnaker, non spinnaker, cruising and performance handicap racing fleet, which is a mix of smaller spinnaker and non spinnaker ships,” said Peter Mack, current commodore of the Hancock Yacht Club. “There are 25 boats representing seven yacht clubs from the surrounding area that make up the four clubs taking part in the races this year.”

“The committee’s job is to organize the course and to provide signals for the start and stop of each race,” said Ed Sanderson, chair of the race committee and principal race officer. “We write the rules and make sure the races are fair for everyone.”

The course was set up in a triangle and the distance was altered for each race due to changes in the wind.

“We started out on Saturday [July 10] with the course set up at a mile between each marker because there was a lot of wind,” said Sanderson. “There wasn’t much wind Sunday, so we shortened the course to a quarter mile between each marker.”

The racers communicated with Sanderson and the committee’s boat via radios. The crews all had good things to say about the races at the end of the second day.

“Committee boat, thank you for a perfect race and a job well done,” said Paul Lockwood, captain of the spinnaker-class vessel “EZ” who finished first in that class.

The other first-place victors were the crews of “Compass Rose,” a non spinnaker-class vessel captained by Mark Brennesholtz; “Julie,” a cruising-class vessel captained by Arch Altman; and “Black Jack,” a non spinnaker class-vessel captained by Dan Bornath won in the performance handicap racing fleet division.
