MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Marine Band San Diego performed their annual Summer Sunset Concert aboard the depot, June 26. The theme of the concert was “Night at the Movies,” and featured guest performances from the depot’s Party Band and a singing performance by the depot’s commanding general.
The concert was hosted by Maj. Gen. Ronald Bailey, commanding general, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region, and offered not only an array of songs from “Star Wars” to “Jurassic Park,” but also featured a top hit from musician Carlos Santana and a spectrum of patriotic tunes.
To help set the atmosphere of the evening, the band asked the audience trivia questions about various films throughout history.
The performance was well received by the audience and smiles could be seen throughout the crowd.
“I think our Marines here did a fabulous job with the concert,” said Staff Sgt. Christian A. Arellano, bandmaster. “I think the overall product was very well received.”
The concert concluded with a tribute to the troops by playing a composition consisting of the various songs of the Armed Services.
“My family enjoyed it,” said Noel Wood, advertising and marketing specialist, WRR. In particular, the Party Band playing Santana. It was a great evening and looked like everyone had a good time.”
During the Party Band performance, Maj. Gen. Bailey sang with the band.
Following the concert he explained how fortunate the depot is to have such a talented group of Marines here.
The earliest photographic history of a Marine Band in San Diego dates back to 1915 when the 4th Marine Regiment Band was posted at Balboa Park, according to historical accounts.
Over the next 30 years, as the mission of the Marine Corps’ presence in San Diego changed, the band’s title also was modified to reflect its role aboard the base. Then, in 1948, when the base was officially recognized as Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, the band was given the title Marine Corps Recruit Depot Band.
In recent years, to better identify with the missions of recruiting and public relations in San Diego and the Western United States, the band’s title was updated to Marine Band San Diego.
The depot’s summer and winter concerts are performed annually and serve as an way for the Marine Corps to give back to the local community.
According to comments from the audience, the band did exactly that.
“As always, the band delivered,” Wood said.
