CAMP TAJI, Iraq — Soldiers with Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 103rd Sustainment Command, met at the post driving range here July 12 to hit golf balls, take photos and show their appreciation to the “Bunkers in Baghdad” organization, which donated golfing equipment to the base.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Master Sgt. Jeff Ball, transportation noncommissioned officer- in-charge with RHHT, 278th ACR and a Maryville, Tenn., native. “It’s good to be able to go to the driving range and do something different.”
According to the organization’s website, Bunkers in Baghdad is a not-for-profit charity that collects and sends new and used golf balls, clubs and equipment to troops currently serving in combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Lee A. Kies, safety officer with the 278th ACR and a Goodlettsville, Tenn., native, spearheaded the effort to get the equipment for RHHT.
“Someone told me about the Bunkers in Baghdad organization,” Kies said. “In late May I checked out their website. I told them who we were and where we were and two weeks later about 1,200 golf balls and assorted clubs arrived.”
Kies said all the staff of Bunkers in Baghdad asked in return was photos of the troops using the equipment to post on the organization’s website.
Bunkers in Baghdad also supplies golf equipment to the Wounded Warriors program to aid in the rehabilitation of injured Veterans.
