BLACK SEA, At Sea - USS Taylor crew members participate in a compliant visit, board, search and seizure exercise with the Turkish Navy frigate TCG Yavuz, July 19, during exercise Sea Breeze 2010.
The two ships used the training opportunity to familiarize themselves with each other’s VBSS equipment and techniques.
“It is not often we get the opportunity to board other ships, besides U.S. platforms,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin McCarthy, fire controlman. “Boarding Yavuz expands our level of experience, making us a better and more effective team.”
Taylors’ 13 man boarding team started training with Yavuz crew while in-port Odessa, July 12-17. During this time they demonstrated the types of equipment and techniques that they would use during the actual boarding exercise comparing.
“Turkish teams use many of the same procedures as the U.S.,” said Turkish navy Cmdr. Eyup Erturk, Yavuz’s executive officer. “We have a lot of experience from our patrols in the Persian Gulf.”
The VBSS team used a rigid hull inflatable boat to transit to the ship for the boarding and a Jacobs’ ladder to climb from water level up to the ship's deck. Once aboard, the team checked the crew and cargo manifests for irregularities, questioned Turkish sailors, and searched the ship for contraband.
“Everything went really well,” said Lt. j.g. William Kuhn, Taylor’s boarding officer. “[One] of the lessons we took away from this exercise is that we need to tailor our team size to the type of ship and mission we are planning to execute.”
Sea Breeze is an invitational combined and joint maritime exercise in the Black Sea with the goals of enhancing Black Sea nation maritime security capabilities and improving Black Sea theater security cooperation strategies.
