CAMP PHOENIX, Afghanistan – Four South Dakota Army National Guard Soldiers were awarded the U.S. Army Combat Action Badge today, during a ceremony at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan.
The 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade members Spc. Brittany A. Ketcham, of Hartford, Spc Jacob T. Nelson, of Cokato, Minn., Staff Sgt. Robert J. Schmidt, of Sioux Falls, and Staff Sgt. Jason S. Sussner, of Sioux Falls, were awarded the badge for having received direct enemy fire while on a mission in Kabul earlier this month.
The members are a part of the 196th's Security Force team, responsible for transporting unit personnel, providing personal security and medical support.
Gov. Mike Rounds was on-hand to present the award to the Soldiers. He and four other state governors have been traveling throughout southwest Asia this week, to visit with servicemembers and receive an overview of military operations and reconstruction efforts in the region.
“To be a part of this ceremony is very special. To have the opportunity, along with the 196th, in the awarding of these four badges is something I will always remember,” said Rounds. “These Soldiers are in harm’s way but they are taking care of each other and getting the job done.”
The Sioux Falls based 196th has been providing installation management for 11 military bases known as the Kabul base Cluster in the capital. This is the first time the CAB has been awarded to 196th members since assuming command of the KBC on June 26.
