“I never won anything before in my life,” said Capt. Stephen Cady, mortars platoon leader, Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, as he accepted a Harley Fat Boy Lo June 30 at the Pikes Peak Harley Davidson, after winning it in a contest.

The military appreciation contest, which was open to active-duty and retired military personnel ran from November to December, said Ken Phelps, general sales manager, Pikes Peak Harley Davidson.

“It is great that he won the motorcycle while deployed,” Phelps said. “Along with the bike, the dealership gave him a free motorcycle training course.”

Cady, who was not a previous rider, said he found out about the contest on the motorcycle dealer’s website during his deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and he was excited about actually winning it.

“When I received the e-mail in December telling me I had won, I was very skeptical at first. After I called them, I realized I had actually won,” Cady said.

Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Wilson, senior enlisted leader, 3rd Sqdn., 61st Cav. Reg., who attended the event with Cady, said he was happy someone in the unit won the contest.

“He is taking precautions by taking safety classes beforehand,” said Wilson.

The 4th BCT began an online club that allows riders to post announcements when they plan to take trips, allowing Soldiers to ride together, Wilson said.

“With just one click, new riders have the opportunity to pair with experienced riders. This is just one of the many things we are doing to help keep Soldiers safe,” he added.

“Colorado Springs is among the best military towns,” Cady said. “The Springs community’s partnership with the military helps to make Fort Carson the ‘Best Hometown in the Army,’” Cady said of the support showed to the military by local area businesses.
