KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents in Helmand province last night.
The security force was in pursuit of a Taliban military commander who is also assessed to be a deputy commander of the Lashkar Gah District who commands more than 100 fighters.
The security force targeted a series of compounds east of Tajikha in Lashkar Gah District to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the buildings and then secured the area. After questioning all of the residents, the security force detained two suspected insurgents for further questioning.
Afghan and coalition forces did not fire their weapons and the women and children were protected throughout the search.
"These operations prevent violent extremists from being able to threaten Afghan sovereignty or maintain safe havens from which they can threaten the security of the Afghan people," said Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
