    Joint Task Force - National Scout Jamboree

    FORT A.P. HILL, Va. - “Food brings people together,” said Master Chef Martin Yan, as he addressed on looking eager boy scouts. But not just any kind of food, healthy food is what the chef emphasized while he stood on a platform alongside an Army staff sergeant to demonstrate how cooking can be “quick and easy.”

    As the 2010 National Scout Jamboree comes to a close, having one-day left before the Scouts bid their fair wells, Yan joined with Staff Sgt. Norman Llamas, a Public Affairs specialist with the Joint Task Force here at Ft. A.P. Hill, Va., to work together at giving a cooking demonstration for the Boy Scouts at the National Scout Jamboree. With a gas stove and a frying pan, they turned a tent into a gourmet kitchen.

    “You, young man, come up here”, said Yan.

    He requested volunteers from the audience and urged them closer to have a better view of the demonstration. When two Scouts responded and shifted through the crowd they climbed on stage and chose a station, standing alongside llamas and Yan. They stood behind a rectangular table adorned with herbs and spices as their participation in the demonstration was put to the test.

    “Now I show you how to make an omelet,” said Yan

    Sous Chef Llamas has been cooking for many years. “Clanging” pots in addition to skillfully working a spatula is second nature for him. Cooking for more than 12-years made it simple to help make the demonstration fun and easy for the Scouts as they familiarized themselves with the technique for cooking.

    “I wanted to make them feel that they can do it and not be afraid,” said Llamas.

    Yan looks deceivingly young and his secret is in what he eats, he said. He has been cooking for more than 30-years and has brought his cooking tips to PBS’s “Yan Can Cook,” airing more than 1,500 episodes dating back to 1978. He dutifully toured Asia picking up recipes along the way and concluded that, “Life is a banquet.”

    Eating healthy starts with what people cook, but more importantly that what people cook is healthy. The new chef’s joined the experienced Yan and Llamas for the day in doing what Scouts do, which is leading one another through tasks, in hopes of setting an example as they apply the Scouts Law.

    “You build a house, you dig a hole, now learn how to cook,” said Yan. “You are what you eat.”
