BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana National Guard supported First Lady of Louisiana Supriya Jindal, by transporting donated school supplies for children affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Aug. 2.

Members of the 927th Sapper Company, 769th Engineer Battalion and 239th Military Police Company, 773rd Military Police Battalion, loaded the school supplies on military trucks at the Louisiana Governor's Mansion, in preparation for their distribution.

“It feels great to help the communities and the children of the affected areas,” said Sgt. Dave Cortez of Thibodeaux, La., 769th Eng. Bn.

The first lady delivered the donated supplies to Galliano Elementary, Galliano, La., and Golden Meadow Lower Elementary, Golden Meadow, La. Many children that attend these schools in Lafourche parish, La., were affected by the oil spill.

Jindal expressed that the Guard has helped Louisiana in many ways during this oil spill, and is now helping the affected children.

"From this tragedy, we've seen some real heroes step forward - especially in the case of the Louisiana National Guard. From dropping sand bags for our sensitive marshlands, to building levees and providing support for countless other operations - our Guardsmen and women have gone above and beyond to protect our way of life,” Jindal explained.

“To have them assist in providing school children with supplies for the upcoming school year is truly moving, and because of their service, a lot of families who were impacted by the oil spill, will be able to start the school year off right," she concluded.
