MAIMANEH, Afghanistan – Equipped with numerous medical supplies, Afghan National Police from the Almar District along with Soldiers from Bravo Battery of the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery visited the small village of Narin to provide medical treatment to the community July 26.
Bravo Battery’s 2nd platoon brought two medical specialists who treated several men, women and children from the village for various ailments.
“We brought a male and female medic to assist the people of Narin,” said 1st Lt. David Gutierrez, the platoon leader.
On a blanket set up under a large tree outside, Pfc. Tharius Spearman, a medic with 3-6, assisted more than forty men with issues ranging from sprained ankles to dehydration.
“I think they appreciated the help we gave them a whole lot,” he said.
While aiding the seemingly endless line of women and children inside, Staff Sgt. Jessica Walla, the other medic on the 3-6 mission, noticed a common link between many of the medical problems: water.
“A big thing we brought from this was that they are having a lot of issues with their water,” Walla said.
While the Americans provided medical aid, the ANP officers walked around the village talking with the people, handing out bottles of water and providing security for the operation.
“We partner with the ANP,” said Gutierrez. “They came out here and assisted us in providing security. It just shows them that the Afghan government is willing to work with them and trying to help them out to improve the living conditions in the small villages.”
Before leaving, the medics spoke with the local doctor to see what capabilities he has to help the people of Narin.
“We talked to the local doctor to see what we can do to improve the medical conditions,” Gutierrez said.
The locals continued to show their gratitude and appreciation by providing chai and cookies for the ANP and U.S. Soldiers.
“It’s awesome to see a smile on their face,” Walla said. “To know that they are happy to see us was good.”
For many of the Soldiers lending a helping hand to the locals was an enjoyable experience.
“I’m proud of what we are doing out here helping the people of Afghanistan,” Spearman said. “It’s definitely a memory that I’ll always cherish. I hope we get to venture out to different towns and help out more people and I hope we can come back and check on the people we helped today.”
Gutierrez and the rest of his platoon will continue to work together with their ANP partners in the Almar District and hope to provide this much needed medical aid to several more villages.
