PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. - The North Carolina Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., offers entertaining learning opportunities for both children and adults interested in North Carolina wildlife.

Everyone seems to have a different favorite aspect of the aquarium; be it the river otter display, the stingrays, the shark tank, the new bird exhibit or one of several other features the facility offers.

For Doug P. Thomas, a public relations assistant for the aquarium, the best part of the aquarium is the ocean tank.

The 306,000-gallon tank features several species of ocean wildlife and competes with the river otter display for the title of visitors’ favorite.

“It is amazing to see families come in and watch children’s faces light up and learn,” Thomas said.

The aquarium’s website boasts the ability to show its patrons variations of Carolina’s aquatic life they may otherwise never know existed.

“Feel the spray of a mountain waterfall. Watch river otters play. Touch a stingray. Look a shark in the eye. Explore shipwrecks – without getting wet,” declares the website. “Thousands of aquatic animals take you on a journey from the state’s grand peaks to the open Atlantic, much as a raindrop makes its way to the ocean.”

The aquarium staff consistently strives to provide an educational and fulfilling resource for a knowledge-hungry community of North Carolinians.

Thomas said classes are held on environmental preservations, and displays are rotated to feature different aspects of wildlife.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores recently wrapped up a week long ode to sharks July 25-31, and is set for an Aug. 12 family night centered on a show about the area’s feathered friends.

The show, entitled “Winging it: Birds in flight,” lasts 30 to 40 minutes and showcases regional wildlife that aquarium goers may not expect.

“The aquarium gives people the chance to see animals from the mountains all the way to the shore,” Thomas said.

More “fin-formation” about the aquarium is available at its website, http://www.ncaquariums.com/pine-knoll-shores/.
