MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marines and their families around the world are now able to tour the exhibits at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va., without having to leave the comfort of their homes.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has established the National Museum of the Marine Corps’ “Virtual Experience,” a website allowing deployed Marines and Marine families unable to travel to the museum a chance to view the Corps’ history.

Unable to visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps in person, Steven Wallace of Beverly Hills, Calif., conceived the idea to create a digital version of the museum, explained museum curators.

One year after its conception, the virtual experience is providing visitors an in-depth tutorial on all the artifacts featured in the museum and even more information than can be displayed at the NMMC itself, explained the museum staff. It is a revolution in what national museums can offer visitors within their homes or classrooms.

In a video introduction to the virtual experience website, Gen. James T. Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, stresses the importance of the new tool.

“The National Museum of the Marine Corps is a testament to the accomplishment and sacrifices of Marines and a reminder of the need to support recruitment, education and retention of our Corps,” said Conway. “Today we brought all of this to your desktop. Now you can explore each of the museum’s rich galleries with the click of a mouse.”

“In today’s economy and with Marines deployed around the world, Marines don’t always have the opportunity to visit their national museum,” said retired Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, president and chief executive officer of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. “The virtual experience provides all Americans and Marines everywhere, no matter where they live, the opportunity to be connected to the NMMC and witness their history on display.”

“Since becoming available, the virtual experience has been a huge success, bringing up to 4,000 visitors daily,” explained the museum curators. “In the first two days, the site received 7,000 hits and has continued to have a constant flow of new visitors each day from more than 80 different countries from around the world.”

You can join thousands of others in a virtual tour of your own by visiting the virtual experience website at http://www.virtualusmcmuseum.com.
