KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - The 20th Engineer Battalion, Task Force Lumberjacks, was paid a special visit by the US Army’s highest ranking engineer officer yesterday on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, Chief of Engineers and US Army Corps of Engineers commander, took time to visit the various engineer units, including the Lumberjacks. He received a brief on operations, talked to primary staff officers, and recognized soldiers for their outstanding service during his visit.
Task Force Lumberjack is currently conducting route clearance operations throughout both Kandahar and Helmend provinces.Soldiers in the 20th Engineer Battalion are out on the roadways on a daily basis going up against the deadliest threat to US forces in Afghanistan—the improvised explosive device. Their route clearance mission is not only keeping the roadways safe for US Forces, but is also contributing to saving the lives of the local population.
Task Force Lumberjacks consists of 18 route clearance platoons across 6 companies. Task Force Lumberjack, designed as a modular battalion, has companies from Fort Bragg, Fort Lewis, Fort Hood, Germany, and a reserve unit based out of Conway, Arkansas. Combined, the platoons have covered over 100,000 kms in Afghanistan, neutralizing close to 200 IEDs. The 20th Engineer Battalion is based out of Fort Hood, Texas.
