    ANP, ABP, ISAF meet at Shir Khan Border Crossing

    KUNDUZ PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the Afghan National Police, Afghan National Border Police and International Security Assistance Force held a meeting at the Shir Khan Border Crossing in Kunduz province, Aug. 11.

    During the meeting, Brig. Gen. Abdul Razaq Yaqubi, Kunduz ANP police chief, Brig. Gen. Khalil Bakhtiyar, commander of 5th Zone, Afghan National Border Police, German army Brig. Gen. Joachim Langenegger, commander of the 23rd Mountain Infantry Brigade, U.S. Army Col. Bill Burleson, commander of the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Russell Lewis, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment commander discussed the challenges faced at the border and how to mitigate them.

    The Shir Khan Border Crossing straddles the Panj River which serves as the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border. The border crossing is one of two bridges connecting the two countries.

    The border between the two countries is a major concern for the Afghan and U.S. governments since is a major route for drug smuggling and insurgent activities.

    Afghan and U.S. forces are determined to show the Afghan people its commitment to a better Afghanistan and to the people’s well-being, despite the insurgents’ efforts to stop them.
