ABOARD HNLMS AMSTERDAM - The Dutch fast combat support ship, HNLMS Amsterdam (A 836), reached the "half term" day of its deployment as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, Feb. 18.
The task force conducts maritime security operations (MSO) in and around the approximately 2.4-million-square miles that make up the North Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, parts of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea.
MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.
Naval forces from Germany, Pakistan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States make up CTF 150, which was established near the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).
Royal Netherlands Navy Commodore Hank Ort currently leads the task force, marking the first time a Dutch naval officer has done so.
"We're part of the Dutch participation of OEF, where the desired [result] is that there's going to be a secure and stable region," said Amsterdam Commanding Officer, Royal Netherlands Navy Commander George van Aalst.
"Although our primary mission is to provide support for the other coalition ships, we also actively participate in maritime security operations and [Visit, Board, Search and Seizure]," he said.
VBSS plays a significant role in shaping the environment and setting the conditions for other forces to actively and directly engage international terrorist organizations.
