CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq— Maj. Gen. Vincent Brooks, the commander of United States Division-South, and an Anchorage, Alaska, native, toured various areas operated by soldiers with the 40th Quartermaster Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), Aug. 11 at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.
Brooks’ visit to COB Adder is one of several locations he visited on his tour around southern Iraq. His goal was to observe operations in theater as well as to speak to the soldiers performing their everyday jobs. Brooks asked soldiers about their families, if they had everything they needed, and how they conducted operations, in order to assess efficiency and identify areas in need of improvement.
“Soldiers are doing a great job here,” said Brooks as he talked to a soldier with the 40th QM Company, operating the Supply Support and Activities yard. “All right soldier, tell me about yourself.”
Those words echoed through every section and every yard Brooks visited.
“I was a bit nervous after being questioned directly by Maj. Gen. Brooks,” said Sgt. Donachiko Faison-Cobb, SSA yard stock control non-commissioned officer with the 40th QM Company, and a Fayetteville, N.C., native. “When questioned at times, all we get is a quick ‘how are you doing?’ and that’s all. Maj. Gen. Brooks went into detail as to how I was doing. He demonstrated his commitment to soldiers by ensuring that answers were unrehearsed to gain an insight as to what we do.”
Faison-Cobb stated that Brooks expressed true concern for soldiers by showing that, besides being a leader, he was also human and personable.
Leaders from all over COB Adder were guiding Brooks to various work areas. Many of the respective areas’ leaders explained their mission and operations to him. Brooks’ tour around specific 40th QM Company areas included the Retail Refuel Point, Class I Subsistence Yard, SSA yard, and Joint Distribution Center.
Pfc. Aminata Toure, a SSA yard night shift clerk with the 40th QM Company, and a Timbuktu, Africa, native, was another soldier who Brooks approached.
“It is nice to see how caring senior leaders are,” said Toure. “Maj. Gen. Brooks asked me of my long-term goals and also asked where I was from. This was my first time talking to a high-ranking officer. I explained what my role in the SSA is and my contribution to the overall mission.”
