As of today, the Kosovo Police has started guarding the Gracanica Monastery, taking over this responsibility from KFOR troops.
This is the first step to implement the relevant decision taken by the North Atlantic Council on July 9.
The timeline for the handover of the guarding responsibilities at three more monasteries approved with that decision – the Budisavci, Gorioc and Zociste monasteries – has not been determined yet.
The handover at Gracanica is a major step in the process to increasingly strengthen the responsibility of the security institutions in Kosovo, as they will be guarding one of the most valuable cultural and religious sites in Kosovo.
This action reflects the improved security situation in Kosovo and the confidence that
KFOR has in the capability of the Kosovo Police to perform this important task.
Leaders from all affected communities and relevant institutions in Kosovo have been
informed. KFOR will continue keeping the Serbian Orthodox Church informed of the next steps concerning Budisavci, Gorioc and Zociste monasteries, until the conditions for transferring the guarding responsibility will be appropriate.
KFOR will not take any hasty steps.
No decision has been taken by the North Atlantic Council regarding the Patriarchate of Pec, the Visoki Decani, Devic and St. Archangels monasteries. These sites will still be protected by KFOR.
KFOR remains committed to support the Kosovo Police in guaranteeing the security of these sites, in accordance with its mandate for a safe and secure environment, even after the transfer of responsibility.
