NORFOLK, Va. – The Commander, U.S. Second Fleet ordered all U.S. Navy ships in the Hampton Roads, Va. area to set Sortie Condition Charlie in order to maintain fleet readiness as a precaution due to the approach of Hurricane Earl. After increasing to Sortie Condition Bravo, Aug. 31, the ships were prepared to get underway within 24 hours. Now at Sortie Condition Charlie, fleet readiness remains high with the ships prepared to get underway within 48 hours.
“Although the forecast for Hurricane Earl indicates it will pass offshore of the Hampton Roads area without the destructive winds that would necessitate our fleet to get underway, the storm can still be unpredictable and we should expect high winds” said Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander, U.S. Second Fleet. “I would like to thank all of our sailors for their incredible efforts to prepare our ships to get underway for safer waters in a very short timeline.
Our families also have my gratitude for the preparations they made to increase their readiness while our sailors prepared to go to sea. We won’t reach the peak of hurricane season until Sept.
15, so it is important that the readiness of our ships, sailors and families remains high throughout
this hurricane season. The calm periods prior to the approachig peak season is the time to
prepare.”
Earlier this week, Second Fleet and the Naval Maritime Forecast Center in Norfolk, Va., watched Earl’s track closely to predict the storm’s potential effects for the East Coast and the Hampton Roads area.
Foul weather preparations start with Sortie Condition C, with ships prepared to get underway in 48 hours. At Sortie Condition B, ships must be prepared to get underway within 24 hours. Sortie Condition A indicates the execution of the sortie.
The setting of a sortie condition does not mean the actual sortie is inevitable. Should weather forecasts indicate, the sortie condition may be downgraded at any time.
