CHARLESTON, S.C. – Greenville, S.C., native Master Sgt. Derrick Owens retired, Sept. 1, from the South Carolina Army National Guard with 27 years military service.
His last assignment, which Owens held since Sept. 2008, was with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade located in Charleston, S.C., where he was the senior supply sergeant for the brigade.
Owens began his military career in 1982, when he enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard.
“Both of my parents were Marines and I was tired of bailing hay, so I joined the National Guard,” said Owens.
Previous assignments included serving in the National Guard in North Carolina, Florida, and Texas.
“South Carolina Guard is the most professional organization that I have served with,” said Owens after receiving the Meritorious Service Medal, Sept. 1.
After retirement, Owens plans on traveling and using the military benefits he has earned.
