CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq - Soldiers working in the Standard Army Ammunition System-Modernized office, 60th Ordnance Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), maintain ammunition accountability at the ammunition supply point on Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.

“The SAAS-MOD office is the brains of the ASP’s mission,” said Sgt. 1st Class James Bender, the ASP’s non-commissioned officer-in-charge with the 60th Ord. Company, and an Austin, Texas, native. “It keeps track of the dollar value, short-tons, and the net explosive weight for the ASP.”

The soldiers in the office are Sgt. Dane C. Gell, the SAAS-MOD non-commissioned officer-in-charge, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native; Pfc. Matias Bravo, a SAAS-MOD clerk, and a Ventura, Calif., native; and Staff Sgt. Patrice S. Harris, a section sergeant and an Altus, Okla., native.

Although Bravo and Gell both agreed that they would prefer to be out in the ASP yard getting their hands dirty, they understand that they play an important role in ensuring the ammunition mission is a success.

“I am not sweating, but I would prefer to work in the yard,” said Gell. “But after all, someone has to keep track of it all.”

Gell added that the office’s biggest challenge is keeping the customer units happy.

“It is difficult to keep the customer satisfaction rate at a 100 percent, but we do our best,” he said.

“I do enjoy my job working with the SAAS-MOD system and I understand the importance of my work to the ASP and to the redeployment of forces throughout USD-S,” said Bravo. “We are making a difference with one piece of ammunition at a time.”

Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Lacasse, the ASP platoon sergeant with the 60th Ord. Company, and a Springfield, Vt., native, also stressed the importance of their mission.

“With the ongoing redeployment of forces, the ammunition retrograde is a very important piece of the puzzle, and without an effective and efficient SAAS-MOD office, there could not be a successful retrograde of that ammunition from Iraq,” he said.
