KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - An Agriculture Team from the Iowa National Guard is listening to the Afghans they’re trying to help. Capt. Peter Shinn reports.
The Iowa National Guard’s 734th Agri-Business Development Team meets with Kunar ag officials at an orchard demo farm to get suggestions for improvement. One idea? Introducing Baer – a hearty native Afghan crop. And the Kunar ag director has another suggestion – installation of a water collection system.
INTERVIEW WITH MOHASAL KHAN
And the leader of the ADT’s ag section is listening to what the Afghan officials have to say.
INTERVIEW WITH LT. COL. NEIL STOCKFLETH
The listening continues at the Kunar governor’s compound a few days later, when the ADT hosts an iftar - a dinner which comes at the end of the day’s Ramadan fast for aderents of Islam. The meal features locally grown agricultural produce and foods. It’s an opportunity the Iowa agriculture specialists to meet and dine with Kunar ag director Mohasal Kahn’s staff and with local farmers and livestock producers of Kunar province. The governor of Kunar province is also on hand for the iftar meal and he is impressed with the Iowa Ag Team’s approach.
INTERVIEW WITH KUNAR GOVERNOR FAZLULLAH WAHIDI
Wahidi’s only request? Even more support for Kunar’s agriculture sector.
Capt. Peter Shinn, Kunar province, Afghanistan.
