MOSUL, Iraq - Over the last few years, the U.S. Army has taken note of the different ways Soldiers improve their combat vehicles. The Army, in conjunction with General Dynamics, developed the Combat Ballistic Shield system.
The CBS is a series of ballistic-proof metal armor plating strategically bolted to the top of the Stryker combat vehicles.
"These shields take the place of add-on-armor and sandbags Soldiers have put on their vehicles," said Greg Schneider, civilian employee for T.J. Fig Inc., a contractor from Stockton, California.
Schneider heads a crew of five men who install the CBS systems. The company has a 4-month contract to install CBS systems on 123 Strykers in the Mosul area. To date they have installed the system on 97 vehicles.
"We can generally get one vehicle done in about an hour and a half," said Robert Phillips, one of the men on Schneider's crew.
The men do not have regular work hours; they go to work whenever the Stryker vehicles are available to be fitted. Schneider's team works long hours; day or night.
As a result of the CBS team's hard work to enhance the protection of Soldiers, they were awarded certificates of achievement by the local command.
"It's all about the Soldiers" safety, they are the real heroes here," Schneider said.
