MOSUL, Iraq (Mar. 4, 2006) -- The dining facility at Forward Operating Base Courage in Mosul, Iraq, offers a variety of food for Soldiers to enjoy.
Most of the employees, that serve up food on a daily basis to ensure Soldiers are happy eating, have a Pilipino origin.
"We make lots of different foods for the Soldiers," said Nic Aguinaldo, DFAC Manager. "We make American food, Chinese food and some Pilipino dishes."
The DFAC employees work 12 hour shifts and stay busy preparing food and cleaning the facility.
"I love this job," said Romel "Big House" Valenzuela, hamburger cook, "To see Soldiers walk in with a smile on their faces, makes me smile and that makes me happy.
Dennis Bonito, a food server from the Philippines said, "I really like my job. I've been here two months. I came here to make money for my family back home, but seeing the Soldiers and how they appreciate my job makes me feel really good inside."
"I enjoy my job here at the dining facility," said Renelin King, food server from the Philippines. "It's an honor and a great responsibility to be here helping Soldiers. I am very happy to be able to serve them their food."
"Each worker in the DFAC plays an important part in serving the U.S. Military and especially the Soldiers here on FOB Courage," Aguinaldo said.
Retired Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Mert Cartujano has been working in Iraq as the Kellog, Brown and Root food service manager for 18 months. He is in charge of all food preparation.
"It's is very rewarding to be here around Soldiers," he said. "These Soldiers put their lives on the line everyday, so I am glad we are able to give them a little bit of home. Food is a way to a Soldier's heart."
