CENTRAL CITY, Ukraine – “Always ready,” a well known phrase among soldiers, is evident in Rapid Tridents preparation against counter-insurgency.

A multi-national war gaming exercise began here on Thursday, led by English Brig. Gen. Nicholas Welch, commander of 7th Armored Brigade.

The intended goal of war gaming is to build successful responses to possible counter-insurgency scenarios. The focus will be in situations of mass casualties, humanitarian aid failure and those sorts of things which would trigger a major reaction. The planning process will look at the number of courses of action by ratifying plans, working out gaps in the plan, building contingency plans and issuing orders against ‘what-ifs’. Simulated events are done through a large connected computer system, which will be executed throughout the coming week.

“This is a tremendous training opportunity where we have 40 nations in this headquarters,” Welch said, “We’ve had a tremendous start here.”

Being able to work in such a large multi-national exercise allows people to share their ideas and various perspectives to create the best possible solutions.

“That again is extremely useful. There’s no monopoly on ideas when it comes to counter-insurgency. From all the nations I’m learning every day. I think the cooperation we’ve seen here has been extremely useful.” He said.

Welch said he is extremely grateful, particularly to the U.S. and Ukrainian Armies, for providing this type of training opportunity. Many other soldiers have also expressed that they look forward to this exercise, which will provide them with an assortment of problem solving techniques and plans for future success in their respective host nations, such as Sfc. Urban Kralj of the Slovenian Army.

“This is my first time working with the British,” he said, “I’m very comfortable with how things are being done, and I’m looking forward to more.”
