CAMP TAJI, Iraq – An Army paralegal specialist serving in Iraq was announced the winner of his unit’s weight loss competition Sept. 10.

Spc. Tim Gallups, a native of Alexander City, Ala., lost nine pounds in the Enhanced Combat Aviation Brigade (eCAB), 1st Infantry Division’s weight loss competition. The competition lasted 10 weeks and included nutritional training and group weigh-ins, much like the hit television show, “The Biggest Loser.”

“I did it for my Family,” said Gallups. “I’m engaged now, and when I have a family, I want to be able to run around the yard with my kids and not worry about my health.”

Gallups has lost 24 pounds since deploying to Iraq this March. His goal is to lose about 20 more pounds to reach 195 pounds before returning to Ft. Riley, Kan., his unit’s home station.

The eCAB, 1st Inf. Div. started the competition three months ago under the direction of Lt. Col. Daniel Johnston, the brigade’s surgeon. The competition started with a week of nutritional training, and Johnston said around 300 soldiers attended.

The competition was organized to encourage soldiers to improve their physical fitness, a goal in line with the Army’s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program, which focuses on five dimensions of soldier strength and readiness: physical, emotional, spiritual, family and social.

“I’m thankful for how the military has helped me get fit,” said Gallups, “but I’m doing this for my family.”
