LIMA, Peru - Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training Command Security Force Assistance Mobile Training Team Peru deployed to Lima, Peru, Sept. 13-24, for a level II small boat patrol operations training mission aboard Peruvian naval base Callao.

The level II training course will improve the capabilities that are taught through the level I small boat basic coxswain and navigation fundamentals course, which the Peruvian coast guardsmen received in 2008.

The training is designed to help develop Peru's mission planning and small boat operations along their coastline.

While hands-on training is part of the course, the students will also participate in classroom training for the first week, to include small boat simulations using the Peruvian coast guard's 30-foot small boats in the port of Callao.

"My team came here to Peru to increase the level of knowledge and capabilities of the Peruvian coast guard small boat patrol operations and maritime security and safety," said Chief Petty Officer (EXW/SW) Jack Bustillos, boatswain's mate, mission commander. "The training is very fast paced and highly intensive. They will learn a lot from this training, enabling them to be more efficient in guarding their coastlines."

The first lessons covered waterborne security, harbor familiarization, boat patrol maneuvers and formations, and command and control mission planning.

"From this training the Peruvian coast guard will have the knowledge and capabilities needed to protect their coastline," said Petty Officer 1st Class (EXW) Edwin Mantilla, boatswain's mate, team leader. "They will be able to improve their small boat patrol operations and decrease the amount of illicit trafficking that is originating from their coastline."

Mobile training teams specialize in providing training in foreign locations and improves local nations' capabilities to govern and protect themselves and their geographic areas of responsibility. This training also supports critical regional stability by helping improve the nation's capabilities in exercising maritime sovereignty.
