Coast Guard rescues 2 after vessel capsizes crossing Tillamook Bar

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard rescued two people after their fishing vessel capsized crossing the Tillamook, Ore., entrance bar, Sunday, Oct. 3.

The 56-foot fishing vessel, Double Eagle, contacted Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay via VHF radio channel 16, notifying the Coast Guard of its intent to cross the Tillamook Bar at 5:30 p.m.

Station Tillamook Bay dispatched two, 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crews to the bar entrance as a precautionary measure.

While crossing the bar the Double Eagle capsized, forcing the two persons aboard into the water.

One of the rescue boat crews responded, rescuing both individuals and transporting them to awaiting Emergency Medical Services at Station Tillamook Bay for evaluation.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

"Both individuals were wearing personal flotation devices, a factor that kept them both on the water's surface and directly contributed to their immediate rescue," said Master Chief Petty Officer Michael Saindon, officer-in-charge of Station Tillamook Bay.
