BASRA, Iraq – A new kind of tank made its debut at the U.S. base near the Basra International Airport recently, and it was received with raucous applause.
Durrell Babbs, also known as Tank, has been touring military bases since September 28, making the United States Division-South Resiliency Campus in Basra his sixth, and final,
stop.
“I wanted to save the best for last,” the Milwaukee native said. “We’re always well received.”
This was Tank’s second visit to Basra.
“We thought it was really cool to come here again; it’s also a very good opportunity for us,” Tank said.
Coming to Basra “was something I couldn’t say no to,” the R&B singer said. “It made a lot of sense for me to come here because of what you all are doing out here.”
The excitement for Tank coming to Basra showed when Spc. Derrin Evans, a soldier with the 1st Inf. Div., jumped on stage and impersonated a dance move of Michael Jackson as an oldie of his was being played.
“I’ve been listening to Tank’s music for years, so I was looking forward to his arrival when I heard he was coming.” said Evans.
“I think this is the most fun I’ve had since I’ve been here. I got to be a dancer for a night,” said the San Diego native.
Tank included some old school music with his latest releases that got the crowd involved.
“I like how they got the audience involved,” said Sgt Efren Torrez, a Soldier with 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment.
“They put on a good show. I like all music”, Torrez said, “and I’m glad they played a variety of songs.”
“The variety is what made coming here tonight, an enjoyable experience for me.” said the Mexico City native.
“Coming here is fun for me; I don’t experience it like you do,” Tank said. “With an airman for a father, I traveled a lot so I understand what you all are doing here.”
“For us to come here and say thank you personally, give you some entertainment, take your mind off the sand and the heat is our way of giving back,” said the entertainer.
