1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade

MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Afghanistan – The soldiers of the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade “Iron Eagles” celebrated the opening of their command headquarters tactical operations center and administrative and logistics operations center buildings Tuesday, July 27 on Camp Marmal in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan.

The occasion featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, raising of the German, American and Afghanistan national flags, as well as, the brigade colors on location and the formal recognition of the SEABEES who made it all possible.

SEABEES of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Four, Task Force Bobcat, whose home port is Naval Base Ventura County, began construction of the first building May 2 and had both buildings at beneficial occupation status by June 23, just in time for the incoming Iron Eagles.

Spc. Kecia Allen, a native of Queens, N.Y. and a paralegal specialist in the 4th CAB headquarters is happy not to be working in tents.

“I think it’s amazing that we get to work in these buildings,” Allen said.

The Iron Eagles brigade was not expecting to work in buildings so soon after arriving at the multi-national coalition camp.

“We’re all 8,000 miles from home and the fact that Americans can come together and build something like this has helped me to get our aircraft to the fight much faster than I could working from a tent in this heat,” said Col. Daniel E. Williams, the 4th CAB commander.

The 4th CAB deployed to Afghanistan as part of the presidential surge. Due to the expeditionary deployment, the Brigade has worked diligently to develop unique systems that allowed them to get into the fight sooner and provide critical aviation support to Regional Command – North.

The SEABEES of NMCB 4 began their deployment in January and will redeploy this August.

The Iron Eagles ended the ribbon cutting ceremony with a wave of applause and warm thanks for TF Bobcat. The 4th CAB commander presented the construction team with Army medals, certificates of achievement, and 4th CAB command coins in appreciation for all their hard work and dedication in ensuring a successful mission start for the 4th CAB’s deployment.
