CAMP MARMAL, Afghanistan – In a work-yard floored with white rock, amid a labyrinth of shipping containers, with the Hindu Kush mountain-range as a backdrop, the 404th Aviation Support Battalion ‘Providers,’ 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, uncased their battalion colors in a ceremony here Aug. 5.
The soldiers of the 404th ASB were called to attention by Commander of Troops, Maj. Heather R. Newberry, the battalion executive officer, as Lt. Col. Michael J. Best, the 404th commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. James R. Hamm, battalion command sergeant major, uncased the Provider colors.
“The uncasing ceremony officially marks the beginning of our combat deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom,” said Best, “and ends the deployment process.”
The 404th ASB offers ground and air support to the 4th CAB task forces throughout Afghanistan in Regional Commands North, South and West. They are comprised of avionic repair mechanics, as well as many other combat support personnel.
Best said the Provider’s mission is to provide world-class logistical support in order to allow the 4th CAB to succeed in full spectrum operations. He added the mission also includes taking care of soldiers, enabling them with the tools to be successful.
“The ceremony was an important, unifying event for the battalion and a way for all the soldiers to collectively mark the beginning of our combat operations,” he said.
The 404th ASB deployed to Afghanistan beginning in June 2010, with the shortest dwell time between deployments in aviation history. The 404th ASB is among the 30,000 additional troops that President Obama called up for support of OEF.
