CAMP VRELO, Kosovo - Turkish soldiers with Multi-National Battle Group-East took part in a massive, two-day crowd and riot control training event hosted by Kosovo Forces Headquarters, with representatives from all five Battle Groups and European Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, Sept. 16 - 17.
The Turkish soldiers worked together with other Battle Groups and EULEX to provide security for a simulated meeting involving a government official. The soldiers also provided inner and outer security to protect a Property with Designated Special Status, an area or institution under special KFOR protection.
The last day of the event saw a scenario with EULEX in the lead as a small group of mock "rioters" assembled. The "rioters" were comprised of soldiers from Morocco and Slovakia.
The crowd began to grow and become more violent through the course of the exercise, and EULEX called for support from their tactical reserve. The "rioters" became violent to a point where they then called for KFOR assistance.
MNBG W's Slovenian forces arrived first to drive the "rioters" from the PrDSS site and to reinforce EULEX forces. The task then moved to MNBG E's Turkish Coy, commanded by Turkish army Capt. Hakram Ozkubat.
"These exercises can give us an opportunity to learning from other nations within KFOR, not only the Americans, Greeks, Polish, Armenians, and Ukrainians in Battle Group East," Ozkubat said. "The training here is good for our soldiers and is very realistic."
Part of the training involved reacting to an injured soldier, played by Pvt. Kemal Sinandelu, 1st Platoon Turkish Coy, which required a medical evacuation. Medics quickly administered first aid to treat the simulated injuries and call for a medevac from MNBG-E's aviation assets.
With a EULEX platoon on standby and Turkish soldiers securing a landing zone, a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk landed to retrieve Sinandelu.
After a few minutes on the ground, the Blackhawk took off with Sinandelu, and the rest of the Turkish Coy resumed pushing back the rioters from the PrDSS site.
"Kosovo police and EULEX are in the lead and able to handling situations similar to this, but these training events allow me to see my soldier's capabilities," Ozkubat said.
