BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - It has happened more than 190 times since the beginning of October - and it will happen many more times before the year is out.
Raising his right hand and pledging to serve his country for another three years, Army Sgt. D. Murphy, a mechanic in Headquarters Company of the 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion, did his part.
Like many Soldiers in the brigade, known as 'the Muleskinners," Murphy received a re-enlistment bonus. While he didn't receive as much as some, Murphy's bonus pushed the brigade over $2 million in re-enlistment bonuses paid to Muleskinner Soldiers during this fiscal year.
The re-enlistment rate surged with the Muleskinners" deployment to Afghanistan, said Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Giesen, a career counselor with the brigade.
The re-enlistment bonus is tax-free to Soldiers serving in a hostile-fire zone.
Most Soldiers are eligible to receive as much as $15,000. A targeted bonus of as much as $22,500 for Soldiers whose terms of service expire before Sept. 30, 2007, has kept him particularly busy, Giesen said.
The bonuses are paid in lump sums - which gets other Soldiers" attention.
"A lot of people who say they aren't re-enlisting in the rear change their minds once they get here and see everyone else getting that paycheck," Giesen said.
Needless to say, the brigade is on track to reach its re-enlistment goal for the year. Even Giesen has done his part, taking home his piece of the $2 million when he re-enlisted for six years and received a substantial bonus.
