BAQUBAH, Iraq (March 15, 2006) " Successful Iraqi Army operations are essential to the stabilization of Iraq.
The 4th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division was tasked to conduct the planning and execution of a brigade-sized cordon and search mission of the Hib Hib area of Baqubah, Iraq.
During a morning targeting meeting, the Iraqi Army battalion commanders briefed their areas of operations. Overseeing their plan was 2nd Lt. David Hulse, the 4th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Division Military Transition Team intelligence officer. He serves as an advisor to his Iraqi Army counterpart.
"I give additional suggestions on anything they may have missed as far as targeting," said Hulse. "We collaborate and find targets to plan for the mission. They have been doing a good job."
The early morning mission kicked off with the brigade-sized force moved into place, sectioned off their areas of operation and searched for their targets. The 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions of the 2nd Brigade 5th Iraqi Army were the main units involved.
After the search, all the detainees were brought to a collection point. The troops then mounted up and traveled a short distance to the palm grove area where they would conduct a sweep of the vegetative area.
Assembling on line and communicating with their adjacent elements, the forces swept the wood line looking for weapons caches and anyone that may have tried to flee the neighborhood area.
When the mission was all said and done, 20 detainees were apprehended including three Iraqi Army High Value Targets. One confessed to being a member of Zarquwis terror cell, attacking coalition forces, placing IEDs and killing two members of the Iraqi Army. A small cache was also found consisting of one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, one unauthorized AK-47 assault rifle and one gas mask.
"They have grown by leaps and bounds since we showed up in December," said Hulse.
Operations such as these by the Iraqi Army's 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division are proving to be a positive step in the competence of Iraqi Security forces and the stabilization of Iraq.
