MOSUL, Iraq (March 29, 2006) -- Soldiers of Forward Operating Base Courage enjoyed an evening of rock music by two musical groups from the 76th Army Band from Mannheim, Germany.
"This is our rock band," said Spc. Jeffrey Long, vocalist and sax player. "We're touring around the FOBs trying to bring the troops a little something."
The band is called Article 15 with trumpet and saxophone accompaniment from the horns section called UCMJ.
The band performed hits by the Commodores, Outkast, Michelle Branch, and Maroon5.
The 76th has a large musical repertoire. It features a Dixie band, a woodwind quintet, a brass quintet, a brass band, and specifically for Iraq, a rock band. The band is stationed at Camp Victory.
"What we do as a rock bandâ?¦ we play a bunch of pop music all the way back to the 60's to present stuff," Long said. "Down here, our mission changes. We get to form a rock band."
"It's probably been the most musically fulfilling time in my career," said Sgt. Stephen Edgerton, bassist for Article 15, 76th Army Band. "You get to play for people who appreciate it. These guys go outside the wire all day every day. You never know when one song will take them back, to give them that motivation to keep going."
Most of the band members play more than one instrument. Edgerton, for example, is a tuba player by training but joined Article 15 because he also plays bass guitar.
