BAQUABAH, Iraq (March 17, 2006) - A staff officer with 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, logged a time of 20:31 to earn top honors at the Forward Operating Base Warhorse St. Patrick's Day 5-kilometer run.
The run was hosted by the base's Morale, Welfare and Recreation office and had about 20 participants. It's going to be the first of several competitions held here at this base in northern Iraq.
Leesville, La., native Maj. Jon Howerton, who serves as effects coordinator for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division here, logged the winning time in the event. The top female finisher was 1st Lt. Julie Zavage, a battle captain with 64th Brigade Support Battalion, who hails from Pittsburgh.
Both were rewarded a $20 gift certificate from the Green Bean, the post's coffee shop. Second- and third-place winners won extended stays at the MWR Internet Café.
While she was pleased with her prize, Zavage said she mainly runs for the enjoyment. It's something she often does back Fort Carson, Colo., where the division is based.
"It gets me up and gets me going," Zavage said. "I enjoy the fresh air and I feel like I have a lot more energy when I get up and run in the mornings."
Runners up in the male competition were 1st Lts. Clay Keel, Company C, 64th BSB, and Ahren Reiter of Company E, 1-8 who serves as a member of the 329th MIT. Capt. Alyssa Schwenk, the 3rd BCT judge advocate, was the second-place finisher in the women's division.
Friday's run was the first since the Colorado-based Soldiers made the transition to the base camp in January. The numbers weren't high due to the unit's operational tempo and units holding Army Physical Fitness Training testing.
"I thought it went pretty well for the first time," said Chad Stroud, who serves as FOB Warhorse's MWR supervisor. "It will get more popular as other events come along."
Stroud said MWR plans to host events marking March Madness as college basketball teams vie for a chance to play for the NCAA Men's Basketball championship. These events will be held April 1-3.
